Happy New Year! 2013 Wrap-up

I can’t believe in 7 hours it’s going to be 2014 in Portugal! Yeah, I know, I enter the new year earlier than most of you so HAPPY NEW YEAR IN ADVANCE!

Oh god, this year went by so fast! Even thought we didn’t celebrate, Chibi Reader made 1 year in November and it has brought so many great things to us. Firstly we got to meet fabulous people: adorable readers who we could annoy and they would put up with us, awesome authors that, amazingly put up with us and fellow bloggers that have become a support and great friends! Since creating the blog we were also able to get to know more books that would have passed right by us unnoticed otherwise. And talking about books, I think it’s time to make a list of my favourite 2013 books!

The Eternity Cure (Blood of Eden, #2)Just One Day (Just One Day, #1)Fracture the Spider's Web (The Marionettes of Myth, #2)The Evolution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #2)Steel Lily (The Periodic Series, #1)

My favourite favourite!

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3)

Of course, I want some things to change in 2014, but what I want the most is to post more. Really, I feel sorry for this blog! After my finals, which will be through January to February, I will try to dedicate myself more to Chibi Reader. Let’s see if that actually happens!

The only thing I can do now is to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope that more amazing books will come out in 2014!

 Favorite color?

Favorite band and / or favorite song?

I love classic rock, and it’s super hard to pick out one band, forget one song, so I’ll go with my current favorite: Imagine Dragons.

How do you come up with your book ideas?

Usually a character just pops into my head and starts telling me a story, but sometimes it’s a song lyric, or something I overhear someone say, or a line from a TV show or movie.

What’s the best prank you’ve ever played on someone?

Me and my high school lab partner in chemistry went out of our way to blow stuff up, so we broke a lot of beakers and test tubes over the course of the year. Our teacher gave us a bill at the end of the year for something like forty bucks…so we brought it all in loose pennies and dumped them on her desk.

What’s your fascination with cops and detectives?

There is just something innately alpha about them. They don’t take any crap, and there are lines that they can never cross.

What’s the thing you love most about Needing Her?

Getting to revisit some of my favorite characters and give them the happy ending they deserve.

 Needing Her:

A fabulous, fun, and sexy New Adult novella from New York Times bestselling author Molly McAdams. If you loved Connor in From Ashes, this is the story for you.

“She’s the girl next door

Maci Price isn’t really into relationships. Having four very protective older brothers has always made having a boyfriend very difficult anyway. But her friend is set on finding her the right guy—and thinks the mysterious Connor Green is the perfect pick.

 He’s her brother’s best friend

Connor Green is trying to find himself again. He loved, then lost, and it’s time for him to pick up the pieces. His brooding is making his friends crazy, but Maci, who has grown up into a gorgeous and incredibly sexy woman, is about to break the spell.

 They’re made for each other

When Maci starts up old pranks to get Connor out of his slump, an all-out war leads to a night that will break all their rules … and a relationship they must keep hidden. Together they’re electric. Apart they’re safe. And soon they’ll each find that they’re exactly what the other needs.”

Book Review: Amulet of Elusion by Katie Lynn Johnson

Amulet of Elusion (The Lost Amulet Chronicles, #1)

Amulet of Elusion by Katie Lynn Johnson

Series: The Lost Amulet Chronicles (#1)

Published: June 12th 2013

Publisher: Self-published

Summary: “Alexa Costa has a life-altering secret…only she doesn’t know it yet.
Confined by law to the kingdom of Alvair until the age of eighteen, Alexa has lived a sheltered existence under the watchful eye of her sword-wielding guardian, Ivy. Her love interest, Caleb Whitman, is exactly the opposite. A merchant sailor and seeker of rare artifacts, Caleb has lived a life of adventure in nearby San Lucero, the long-time rival of Alvair.
After her eighteenth birthday, Alexa’s quiet existence becomes tumultuous, and she realizes she does not need to seek to find adventure. Myths become real, legend becomes fact, and Alexa discovers that she possesses rare abilities which make her a target for both sides in a centuries-old struggle for power. She must use every resource available to her—including her talents with the supernatural Amulets— to help her friends, rekindle her romance with Caleb, and save her island home from destruction.”

Review

I’m going to be honest here, I didn’t know what to expect from this book. I started reading it without any expectation and I can only say I’m ashamed for that. Amulet of Elusion is a book that while it started a tiny bit slow for me, it picked up his pace really fast after the first 4/5 chapters and managed to have me neglecting certain things I had to do * cough* study *cough*. I was amazed by how fast this book grew in me, I really am. It impressed me by its character development, its world building, but most of all by the plot. Oohh I love me some kingdom conspiracies, witchcraft and badass heroines with.

As I was talking about, Amulet of Elusion might start a bit slow but when the action really starts and the plot picks up, damn, just damn, it’s soooo good. Alexa lost her family in a fire and was then raised by Ivy, a friend of her parents. Ivy taught her how to fight and, even though she was kind of overprotective, she was always there for Alexa and prepared her eventually for what was to come, even when Alexa had no idea what was happening all around her. You see, there were certain stones, amulets, that had powers and Alexa was one of the few people who could have access to that power. All the powerful people, especially the king, want those Amulets and a complex mix of conspiracies, races to find the amulets and politics start to take place and Alexa is right in the middle of it.

Don’t worry, of course there is romance in this books! And I felt myself completely immersed in it. They already knew each other when the book starts and thank god for that! I think it made their attraction all the more real. I was a bit apprehensive with Caleb’s POV at the beginning but eventually I figured they were essentially to have a better insight of the story and it complemented perfectly Alexa’s POV. They let the reader understand better what is happening and complete the other POV. Sorry, I don’t really know how to explain it. Let’s just say, it’s like Alexa and Caleb complement themselves. I just think Caleb doesn’t seem like a 20yr old most of the times. Wouldn’t mind him a little but older ehehe

However, I resented him when he was trying to protect Alexa in the end. You don’t  force the person you love from going to battle by chaining her to something! That is just wrong. I wanted Alexa to beat his ass for that. He was lucky she loves him so deeply. If it were me, I would use my amazing powers on him.

Urgh, I know I always complain but it’s so difficult to write a review without to many spoilers! So… This is a book based on a battle between kingdoms and the fight for power so you know there is a battle. Arghh it was amazing, I got chills reading it. And I loved the king’s wife, Jada. Don’t get me wrong, she’s as bad as a villain can get, ruthless, emotionless (unless in a certain scene) and pure evil but what happens in the end of the book, how was that possible? She must have some pure inner power to be able to pull a stunt like that (she gets the full power of an amulet out of nowhere it seemed).

I can’t wait to read Amulet of Power, book 2 in the series. Gah, what did Alexa do? What was her agreement with the Jada? I must know!

Blitz: Savor by Kate Evangelista

Savor (Vicious Feast, #1)

Savor by Kate Evangelista
Publication date: December 5th 2013
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal Romance

Synopsis

Mature and explicit content. Not recommended for readers below 18-years-old. Yup, you’ve got to be that old to read my story. Consider yourself warned.

I’m Dakota Collins, a tough talking, eye patch wearing, workaholic photography student. Why am I important? Well, maybe because I get to spend an entire month with Vicious, only the sickest indie rock band out there.

You see, I needed a subject for my Spring Showcase introspective in order to graduate. During a chance encounter at a club I’d been sent to cover for the Daily Gossip, our ironically named college paper, the features writer I usually teamed up with introduced me to the band—by accident, I might add. It involved a run in with a scary, bald bodyguard. Anyway, long story short, I signed a contract to take pictures of Vicious.

I should have known their handsome yet way too serious for his own good bassist, Luka Visraya, wouldn’t be able to keep his hands to himself. He’s gorgeous and all, but the way he smiles spelled trouble with a capital L. I’m in for a long month with him around.

Crazy shit happens and then some. So, if you want the skinny on Vicious and the events revolving around my stay at Lunar Manor, read my story.

Again, refer to the warning above.”

Savor Exclusive Excerpt

“Dakota Collins!”

I lowered my camera. The use of my full name never came with good consequences. I blinked my vision back at her even if I wanted to spend the rest of the night taking his picture. Sweat rose over my upper lip. I may just have found my subject for the Spring Showcase.

            The only problem?

I had to find a way to convince him to be in my project. Something told me this wouldn’t be easy. By the way my heart beat in my ears, drowning out the music and Silvia having a fit in front of me, I wanted it too much. I wanted him too much.

“This the guy you were saying?” I showed Silvia the picture I’d taken. This seemed to pacify her because she sidled closer, mesmerized like a moth to a flame.

“Luka Visraya,” she said with a moan like she’d just tasted the most luscious chocolate before taking a long gulp of her cocktail. The name didn’t register. Silvia must have noticed my blank expression because she continued. “He’s the bassist for Vicious.”

Still no pings of recognition in my head.

She slapped her thigh. “Where have you been? It’s weird that you haven’t heard of them. Their songs are on the radio like every second.”

Of course I hadn’t heard of them. I liked listening to country and I hardly kept up with current events.

“Name one?” Okay, I had a name. Luka. Exotic. A bassist. Part of a band I should know about. So he’s famous. I slowly felt my chances of asking him to be my subject slip from my grasp. If he was someone famous, fat chance he’d say yes to a graduating photography student like me. I just about deflated when Silvia mentioned one of their songs. “Oh, I know that one!” By accident. It played in the radio of the cab I rode in to Sacrifice. I stared at the picture of him then lifted my gaze to where he sat. “He’s gone.”

“What?” Silvia whipped around in time to come face to face with a wall of man. “Whoa!” She pushed at him. “Watch it, buddy!”

“Give me the camera,” he said in a threatening tone.

Big. Beefy. Bald. The three Bs that made up the quintessential bodyguard.

I clutched my DSLR closer to my chest and looked up at him with my good eye. “And why would I do that?” The patch didn’t seem to intimidate him because he just reached out. So much for my Bond villain aspirations. I moved away from his grubby hand. No one touched my camera but me.

Despite her size, Silvia came between me and the mountain. “We’re here to cover Sacrifice for our college paper. You don’t have the right to take away my colleague’s camera.”

Yeah! You give it to him, Silvy.

Not that I couldn’t take care of myself. But if Silvia wanted to play hero, I wouldn’t stand in her way.

“What seems to be the problem here?” a soft, authoritative voice chimed in.

The bodyguard moved aside to reveal the Gothic Lolita. She stood at just about the same height as Silvia, but she possessed an older aura even if she seemed to be our age.

“She’s been taking pictures,” Baldy said.

Lolita’s kohl eyes landed on me then shifted to my camera.

“As I was saying to the big guy,” Silvia explained. “My colleague and I are covering the opening of Sacrifice.”

“For what paper?” Lolita asked without taking her eyes off me. I clutched my camera like an extra appendage. In some ways it was. After losing half my sight, I relied on my camera like an extra eye, seeing the world through its lens. I would rather die than lose it.

“The Daily Gossip,” I said before Silvia could answer just to relieve some of the awkward tension building in me under her gaze. “We study at Wexler U.”

She tilted her head, crossing her arms.

“Okay,” I quickly stammered out. “I get that the name of our paper sounds like a tabloid, but the Daily Gossip is a cool campus paper.” The last part maybe only I believed since Silvia raised her eyebrow at me, but Lolita and the mountain didn’t have to know that.

No one spoke after that. Even in a noisy club, the silence in our group rang in my ears. Not waiting for the situation to get any more awkward, I plowed forward with my own selfish intensions.

“You know Luka.” I said it more as a statement, but it came out like a question.

            Lolita nodded.

“I’m Dakota Collins and I’m graduating this spring. I was wondering if Luka would be interested in—”

“What would I be interested in?” a smooth voice joined our group.

The walls of my throat closed, chocking the rest of what I had to say. All eyes turned to Luka. Silvia dropped her empty glass. It bounced off the bodyguard’s shoe and landed in a clatter but didn’t break. Even with my height, I still had to look up at him.

“What are you doing here?” Lolita admonished. “You should be backstage.”

One side of his lips came up. God. Without the scowl, his face lit up. I had to stop the urge to lift my camera and start snapping away. And his eyes were piercing blue. The kind that stretched over my mother’s farm in the summer. Damn.

Seeing him up close, I knew I’d give any one of my kidneys for a chance to take his picture in a formal shoot.

“We have five minutes. Chill, Yana.” He tugged at one of her pigtails.

“Luka,” Silvia managed. “I’m a big fan. Will you sign my chest?”

Bypassing my petite colleague, Luka’s intensely blue gaze studied me. He reached out and I flinched back. His fingers almost grazed my patch. What the hell was the matter with him? Trying to touch my eye patch was tantamount to poking a bandage over a wound and asking the person if it hurts.

Gothic Lolita—Yana—yanked Luka’s arm down. “I’m so sorry!” Her whole aura changed. She went from all business to panicky. “My brother sometimes forgets his manners. He didn’t mean anything about touching your…” She bit her lower lip, maybe trying to keep herself from saying the wrong thing.

That little faux pas cleared my head of the Luka haze and spurred me into action. “Luka, will you let me take your picture for my final project?” I didn’t know where my courage came from, but I knew if I didn’t take this chance, I’d regret it. I had to have him as my subject.

Still not removing his gaze from my face, like my patch transfixed him, he tilted his head to one side very much like his sister did earlier.

“Luka, don’t!” Yana said, but from the consideration on Luka’s face, she was too late.

            “You’re a photographer?”

“Yes.” I nodded, in case the word wasn’t enough.

“And you’d like me to be the subject of your project?”

God yes! This time, I could only nod. I didn’t want him to see how eager I was. And I couldn’t live with myself if I embarrassed myself further.

            I waited with baited breath.

It seemed everyone in our group waited with baited breath for what the golden god had to say about my brazen request. I soon realized when Luka spoke, everyone listened. The way he pronounced every word precisely yet still spoke so smoothly, like butter on warm toast, captured everyone’s attention. To say he captivated us was an understatement. Something in me certainly wanted to hear him keep speaking. He could read from an accounting textbook in that voice and no one would get bored.

“I need to know that you’re good,” he finally said.

Something about his words seemed to hold a different meaning. I must have missed the alcohol in the soda Silvia had given me. Maybe I was drunk and this was all a blackout dream.

“What are you saying?” Yana faced Luka all the way now, her petite form all rigid.

He unleashed a full on megawatt smile my way. I almost had to cover my eye from it. At my side, Silvia gasped. Her long nails dug into my arm. Like staring at the sun, I couldn’t take my gaze away from him no matter how bad it was for me.

“We’re about to perform. I want you to take several pictures then send them to Yana. If she approves, we’ll see about your request.”

Then, like smoke, he disappeared into the crowd.

Book Review: Endless Knight by Kresley Cole

Endless Knight (The Arcana Chronicles, #2)

Endless Knight by Kresley Cole

Series: The Arcana Chronicles (#2)

Published: October 1st 2013

Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Summary: “Evie has her full powers as the Tarot Empress, and Jack was there to see it all. Teens reincarnated as the Tarot are in the throes of an epic battle for mankind. She must trust new allies against other Arcana, Bagmen zombies, post-apocalyptic storms, and cannibals. But she’s also drawn to Death, the Endless Knight, who shares history with the Empress. She can’t remember; he can’t forget.”

Thank you Sofyy for lending me this series!

Review

*This review contains spoilers*

Endless Knight is the stunning, but apparently extremely disliked, sequel to Poison Princess (you can read Sofyy’s review about it here). Evie learned about her powers and we finally get to know what Matthew was always talking about. Basically, we now know what the hell was happening in Poison Princess. With all the Tarot cards wanting to kill each other and alliances being formed, the Empress, the Moon, the Fool, the Magician and Jack (poor Jack, he isn’t a card so he doesn’t get a special name) try to formulate a plan to kill Death. But Death seems to be on step ahead of them, Matthew as a certain debt he has to pay so he gives him access to his eyes, and a new plot starts to unveil.

Even though many see this book as an excuse for creating a love triangle, I don’t really see it that way. Sure, by the end it kind of turns into one but them it’s not one again. Arghhh this series is like a mind twister. Does that exist? Doesn’t really matter. I guess it depends on how you see it. When Death suddenly gets the upper hand, sorry for spoilers here but there is a warning right in the beginning of the review, Evie sees herself trapped with him in his fabulous mansion. Oh yeah, Death is handsome, smart AND  rich. He’s the perfect catch, except for a tiny thing he does by the end of the book but I’ll get to that later. Forced to expect death everyday (see the pun here), Matthew tells her the only way to survive is to seduce Death. Some new things are brought to light and *drum roll* Evie befriends Death and throws Jack out of the picture. Not that I minded, not being a Jack fan myself.

Despite being in Death’s team for almost the entire book, I did not like what he does in the end. He completely destroyed his perfect image in my head, and I wanted him to be perfect. I can only hope Evie turns into the badass I wanted in the next book. Yup, I want a Evie villain. In fact, I want a Red Witch in the next book. I wanted her in this book, didn’t get what I want so… Red Witch in book 3 please????

Also, I don’t understand Matthew’s role in all this. I know who he is and what Card he represents, what I don’t know is if he has ulterior motives? I feel like he is the evil guy in this series. He might be only helping Evie so that later on she will hesitate with confronting him. He’s the most confusing character in the series and I want to find out more about him. Even Death is easier to understand! Okay, Jack is still the character that is completely out of context in the whole must-destroy-other-teens game but I get that he obviously loves Evie, even though he did some things, too, that were meh.

Now I have the torturous 1 year wait until the next book, which I think will be fantastic, comes out. Until then I’ll be checking GR to see if the release date has been miraculously changed.

PS: Who makes or chooses these covers? They are awful!

Things I learned from reading YA

*Beware of sarcasm*

It’s been some time now since I’ve began reading Young Adult novels and series and I can say I’ve come across some really good books and some that, well, aren’t that good. But one of the things that make me shocked and sometimes make me laugh is the message some of these books convey to the readers.

There are some pretty ridiculous ones but others make me worried about how girls in special react to them. Maybe I’m the one wrong here and should start doing what the characters in some books do!  Here are the most hilarious and, if I’m honest, really stupid ones that come to mind now:

  • If a guy is trying to kill you should start dating him. And no, you aren’t dating him because you don’t know he is actually attempting to make you dead, you date him EVEN after you knew he tried to take your life. I think I should start looking for my killer charmed.
  • Keep your eyes on the players. Even though they usually get bored with a girl after a week (if that long!) they will fall in love with you. You will probably just have to see him with a different girl every night until he finally realises you exist. But fear not, he will!
  • Bad guys with tattoos are the best. And if they ride bikes??! *swoon* PS: They might be a little possessive and make a big scene whenever they smell a boy 5 miles away from you but who cares? They are badass!
  • A guy is constantly flipping you off. Ignore it, stalk him, you’ll make him fall head over heels for you. Giving you the bird is just a sign he loves you and doesn’t want to end your life with his cursed, but sensual, kiss.
  • A girl is wearing a skirt that is shorter than your (or just prettier, you’re just jealous)? What a slut! She should be sent to a convent.
  • A girl is wearing make up? What a slut! Convent…
  • A girl is prettier than you?????? Slut alert! Convent for life!
  • Parents? What are those? The people who make food magically appear in the table but disappear for the rest of the day? Oh them, they don’t matter.

Now, try finding books that fit these descriptions! I know there are so so many things I’m forgetting right now so, what are the most hilarious but seriously wrong that you have learned from YA books?

Bitter Sweet Love (The Dark Elements, #0.5)

Bitter Sweet Love by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Review

New series by JLA?! Me: “HELL YEAH BABY, I’M READY, BRING IT ON!”

Even though it was short, it was AMAZING! I was just OMMMGGGG all over the place! When I got my hands on this baby I just told myself “so, no sleeping tonight, you know how it is, you begin reading something by JLA, you know the outcome” Indeed, it was… I spent my night reading this, and yes, I did have class, German class actually… I looked like a zombie and could barely utter something intelligent, yet it was totally worth it!

As usual, JLA created a story that once you start reading nothing else exists beyond that, truly, I will always love this author 🙂

This series is about Gargoyles, no, not ugly Notre Dame Gargoyles, but sexy, human-looking ones xD

(this gif is HILARIOUS!)

This story is depicted on the modern times, 21st century, with one exception, Gargoyles revealed themselves to humans. They were commanded to do so by the angels. Hell had a sort-of revolution, somehow a lot of demons escaped and are now roaming the Earth, creating caos. This made the angels take measures, the Gargoyles had to reveal themselves to the world. (Gargoyles hunt demons, btw).

The main character, Jasmine is one, a Gargoyle Warden, she has always been super protected, Gargoyle females tend to die a lot, so the females are treated as something to be protected and cared for. They aren’t trained and don’t hunt demons, that’s what males are for.

Jasmine is heart-broken, Dez left three years ago without telling her a word about it. Jasmine’s father said that Dez and Jasmine should mate, right afterwards Dez leaves. But, three years later he miraculously appears, even though everyone believed he was dead, there he was, alive, well and wanting to mate Jasmine as if nothing had happened at all.

According to Gargoyle’s traditions, Gargoyles are supposed to wait 7 days after they announce their intentions before they mate. Jasmine still loves Dez, but she refuses to accept their mating, she feels too hurt (quite understandable!). Dez then says he will do anything for her so Jasmine asks for a few tasks: traveling around the US, hunting a demon, skinny-dipping (I think there’s one missing), Dez asks in return for a kiss, a kiss after every task (naughty boy ahaha)

I won’t tell you more, this is a super short story, which made me quite sad, I just kept wanting to read more 😦

One thing that caught my attention was a certain half-Gargoyle/half-demon girl … when I read the part where she shows up, I found myself wishing to read her story, and guess what? This series will be about her! 3 F****** BOOKS CONFIRMED HOLY COW!!!

JLA just makes me want to advance on time to read all her upcoming books! White Hot Kiss (book 1, The Dark Element series) is coming out on January, I know it’s December, but January seems so far away… I just want more (and let’s not talk about THE LUXEN SERIES, DONT GET ME STARTED!)
