Every Last Breath by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: The Dark Elements (#3)

Publisher: July 28th 2015

Summary:Some loves will last ’til your dying breath
Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.
Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.
Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…”

Review

What to say… What to say… This book… Well, it wasn’t that good. We started with an awesome book, got a middle book that was simply bad and now ended this should-have-been-great series with… this. Every Last Breath was way better than Stone Cold Touch but none of the sequels did justice to Hot White Kiss. Also, who decided on the horrible book cover changes? The head of the marketing department should be fired. As such, I am using the Kindle cover edition, which is not great but so much better than the new lame ones.

Every Last Breath picks up right where Stone Cold Touch ended, with the gang fining out that the Lillin was already born and had incorporated Sam’s form for a while now. I’m not here to say the premise isn’t good. It is, oh if it isn’t. I just feel like the author didn’t give a damn about this series… The Wardens, Alphas and even the witches want to catch the Lillin so as to not let Lillith get out of Hell. The story was going to a good place and it ended well. However, we never did find out Layla’s exact abilities and some things don’t get all that well resolved. I felt like I needed more, I just didn’t get what I was expecting from Every Last Breath.

We all knew that Roth would end up with Layla (thank god!) and she fortunately decided to stop leading Zayne on pretty fast in terms of chapters. However, I couldn’t help but be so frustrated at how Zayne handled things. He always seemed like the personification of all things good and now he was just kept reminding me of a proud caveman jock. It was bad guys. And when it all turns out good he doesn’t get the ending he deserved, full closure and all. We just get a speck of what might happen in the future and what I saw didn’t really convince me, Jennifer L. Armentrout didn’t manage sell me that possible story line.

But the worst of it all is what happens to a certain favourite character of everyone, and it’s obvious I’m talking about Bambi. This is the part that most baffled me because I just didn’t understand the point of this at all. It was a senseless and illogical decision of the author to make this happen. Why did Roth had to give up Bambi to the witches all of a sudden? I see that this demonstrates Roth’s love for Layla and the measure of what he would do for her but it freaking doesn’t make sense. It was stupid and in my most honest opinion a bad decision from the author. It was unnecessary and doesn’t bring anything new to the plot.

I’m not really going to say anything more because in all that is truth I don’t have many things to say about this book except shake my head at it. I was expecting so much more and the best part was the beginning with Thumper’s appearance (the character that should have appeared more but only made its great entrance once in the first chapters *sigh*).

Blurb: “Every touch has its price. Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.
But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…”

Review

You know that moment when you pick up a book that you’re dying to read and when you finish it you just think “What the fuck did I just read?” Yeah… Stone Cold Touch was a bit like that. I’m sure my lovely co-blogger Sofyy would love to disagree with me and make me not write this review but I’m sorry to say that Stone Cold Touch sucks. Big time.

Now, those who know me and who follow me on goodreads know I LOVE Armentrout’s books, she’s a book goddess to me, so let’s just get this clear right away: whatever I say in this review is not against the author, I love her works and will continue to buy her books as soon as they get released. However, Stone Cold Touch was a huge disappointment and I can’t help but vent my frustration on a review.

White Hot Kiss ended with Roth being sucked into the pits of Hell while saving Layla. Stone Cold Touch picks up soon after that scene. Layla is mourning Roth, Zayne is there for her and Bambi is still being the lovely third wheel that won’t let Zayne get too close to Layla, which is fine by me! Suddenly, CHABAM, Roth is back. Shit is happening, a Lillith or whatever has been made and they must destroy it before it destroys the world. I have no problem with the action and where the story is going, for me it’s perfect but knowing JLA one must know there is a heavy dose of romance coming.

I love me some romance. You come to my house and open my bookshelves and you’re hit with rows and rows of romance books and manga! But I don’t like when the characters are desperate for it. Here we have Layla all hung up on Roth (and with reason! He’s perfect goddamnit) when he goes missing and Zayne is back in the game. He’s smart, obviously, who wouldn’t take this perfect chance to get the girl he likes? The problem here is that Zayne only started moving AFTER he found out she was with Roth. And then, Layla is so undecided about who she likes that she kisses Zayne and whatnot WHILE thinking about Roth. And when I say this I mean she is constantly thinking about Roth. While she kisses Zayne, while she touched Zayne’s fabulous abs, when she looks at Zayne, everytime! Okay, if you haven’t guessed it yet, I’m team Roth. He might have been a little of a jerk in the beginning of the book but it’s obvious he’s head over heels for Layla. It was incredibly frustrating to see how the story was developing and knowing that Layla was becoming dumb as a door.

Also, I don’t know what happened but Layla suffered a huge personality change. I’ve read White Hot Kiss some time ago, when it was released, so some things might not be as clear as they should be in my head, but I don’t remember Layla being this sassy or outgoing girl. Contrary to other JLA’s heroines, she was less badass, she was weaker in a sense, and that was perfectly fine. I was a bit thrown off with this change but I want to see where this is going.

On another point, fans of this author already expect cliffhangers as an ending. Although we do get one, I think this book fell short. There was no mystery to what was going to happen. I saw it coming miles away. It was so on your face, everyone can predict the final in the first chapters. It was sad and I just hope that JLA can make a big comeback and finish this series with a bang with Every Last Breath.

New Adult – The Genre

For those who don’t know what New Adult books are, I found a good definition on Wikipedia (it always comes to Wikipedia, doesn’t it?).

“New Adult (NA) fiction is a developing genre of fiction with protagonists in the 18-25 age bracket. The term was first coined by St. Martin’s Press in 2009 when they held a special call for “…fiction similar to YA that can be published and marketed as adult—a sort of an ‘older YA’ or ‘new adult’.”New Adult fiction tends to focus on issues such as leaving home, developing sexuality, and negotiating education and career choices. (…)”

My definition for NA is: “oh well, a genre for girls like me, who like steamy romances but not too steamy. Stuff tend to get sexy but not sexy as in erotica. ahaha”

I’ve read some erotica books but idk, sometimes it’s just too tmi. Also, usually, erotica books have stories that aren’t worth reading, cause the whole story develops around sex and everything else is cast aside. And by everything else I mean like the main character’s life besides sex… It’s just plain boring most times.

NA is also a mix between YA and Adult, it has YA’s captivating stories and Adult’s smuttiness. It is kind of perfect in my opinion! There are a lot of YA books out there whose couples come to the point that they just have to… have sex? (omg, I’m laughing so much while writing this), and well YA usually then gets like “He undressed me and kissed me. (paragraph) In the next morning I woke up, it was so beautiful (…)” I usually get like “WHAT?! where’s the sex?! that was it?” yeah well, I’ve felt this feeling way too many times… first time with frigging Breaking Dawn (four books to get to that…). However, that’s just what is YA is, it doesn’t get to IT.

New Adult joins what I love the most about YA and Adult books, it is a recent genre (I think), but it is evolving a lot, there are more and more NA books getting written and published every month. There are even authors who had always written YA and are now writing NA. I guess it’s because our society is getting more… sexual? Ha-ha idk, NA is now what’s IN I guess… Or because, like I said, it’s the perfect combination, the Ying and the Yang, awesomeness and sexiness (lmao!)

Anyway, I found NA two years ago, with the one and only Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire! After I finished this book I had just to look for other NA books, cause it was pretty awesome!

Now, two years later, I’ve read lots of NA books, found amazing authors and explored several different worlds!

Here is the list of my favorite New Adult books, I obviously totally recommend them to you if you are a NA fan, if you aren’t, I still want you to read them since they’re totally worth the try!

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens (my review)

The Vincent Brothers by Abbi Glines

Easy by Tammara Webber

The Sea Breeze series by Abbi Glines

Fallen Too Far by Abbi Glines (my review)

Captive in the Dark by C.J. Roberts

Rule by Jay Crownover

Frigid by J. Lynn/ Jennifer L. Armentrout

The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski

Wait for You by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Taking Chances by Molly McAdams

Even though I said NA sounds like the perfect genre it is not my favorite… YA still owns my heart! NA has a problem, the same one I mentioned about Adult, most times the plot is all about a couple and their hardships… Sure it might be interesting for a while but then you need something you can only find on YA, the thrill, the adventure, the it’s not all about love, it’s bigger than that. But little by little, I believe NA will become better on that matter.

Review

New series by JLA?! Me: “HELL YEAH BABY, I’M READY, BRING IT ON!”

Even though it was short, it was AMAZING! I was just OMMMGGGG all over the place! When I got my hands on this baby I just told myself “so, no sleeping tonight, you know how it is, you begin reading something by JLA, you know the outcome” Indeed, it was… I spent my night reading this, and yes, I did have class, German class actually… I looked like a zombie and could barely utter something intelligent, yet it was totally worth it!

As usual, JLA created a story that once you start reading nothing else exists beyond that, truly, I will always love this author 🙂

This series is about Gargoyles, no, not ugly Notre Dame Gargoyles, but sexy, human-looking ones xD

(this gif is HILARIOUS!)

This story is depicted on the modern times, 21st century, with one exception, Gargoyles revealed themselves to humans. They were commanded to do so by the angels. Hell had a sort-of revolution, somehow a lot of demons escaped and are now roaming the Earth, creating caos. This made the angels take measures, the Gargoyles had to reveal themselves to the world. (Gargoyles hunt demons, btw).

The main character, Jasmine is one, a Gargoyle Warden, she has always been super protected, Gargoyle females tend to die a lot, so the females are treated as something to be protected and cared for. They aren’t trained and don’t hunt demons, that’s what males are for.

Jasmine is heart-broken, Dez left three years ago without telling her a word about it. Jasmine’s father said that Dez and Jasmine should mate, right afterwards Dez leaves. But, three years later he miraculously appears, even though everyone believed he was dead, there he was, alive, well and wanting to mate Jasmine as if nothing had happened at all.

According to Gargoyle’s traditions, Gargoyles are supposed to wait 7 days after they announce their intentions before they mate. Jasmine still loves Dez, but she refuses to accept their mating, she feels too hurt (quite understandable!). Dez then says he will do anything for her so Jasmine asks for a few tasks: traveling around the US, hunting a demon, skinny-dipping (I think there’s one missing), Dez asks in return for a kiss, a kiss after every task (naughty boy ahaha)

I won’t tell you more, this is a super short story, which made me quite sad, I just kept wanting to read more 😦

One thing that caught my attention was a certain half-Gargoyle/half-demon girl … when I read the part where she shows up, I found myself wishing to read her story, and guess what? This series will be about her! 3 F****** BOOKS CONFIRMED HOLY COW!!!

JLA just makes me want to advance on time to read all her upcoming books! White Hot Kiss (book 1, The Dark Element series) is coming out on January, I know it’s December, but January seems so far away… I just want more (and let’s not talk about THE LUXEN SERIES, DONT GET ME STARTED!)
