Female Book Characters: Strong vs Weak

When I start reading a book I get into the head of the lead character, whether it is female or male, although obviously it is easier to get into the female’s… since we both share the same reproductive organs and all…

Anyway, today I’m just gonna talk about two types of Female book Characters: Strong, as in, they don’t need to be constantly saved, can think for themselves, usually have dealt with lots of messed up situations throughout their lives, and some of them even know how to kick ass kung fu style.

And the other type Weak. Not weak in the whole sense of the word. Usually this type depends a lot on her friends or boyfriend, needs to be constantly saved and often annoys the hell out me when she can’t decide or do anything for herself.

There’s then, of course the combination of the two. Sometimes a character, who I consider either strong or weak, acts completely out of her “comfort zone”.  Sometimes this occasional change is needed, to build up the story.

If you ask me my favorite type I honestly don’t know… I’d say that my favorite kind of main character is the non-annoying kind. – Unfortunately, sometimes finding a character who isn’t annoying is hard to come by.

A weak-type of character doesn’t necessarily have to be a character who doesn’t know kung fu, or that a strong-type of character knows kung fu… I’m mostly referring to psychological features. Though… well, Kung fu always helps 😉

Going back to my point, as most female characters are what it is considered the weak type, I guess that most of my fav ones are “weak”… Though, as I mentioned before, the important thing is the character not being annoying, meaning, me not wanting to either bash her head against a wall of very pointy nails, or do the simpler option: throw to the book out my window.

Question: So, whats the best kind of female characters? Strong, weak or both?

It doesn’t really matter, it depends on several things, such as: like the quality of the writing, the plot in general, the background of the characters, and most important of all – The ANNOYING factor. These influence how much I will like the character.

In any case, I came up with a list of my fav leading female characters, I “graded” them with an S (Strong), a W (Weak) or an SW (Strong & Weak).

Neryn – Shadowfell series by Juliet Marrillier  – S

Kricket Hollowel – Under Different Stars by Amy A. Bartol  – W

Sadie White – Breathe by Abbi Glines  – SW

Brooke – Real series by Katy Evans  -SW

Layla – White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout  -SW

Savannah – Resisting Her by Kendall Ryan  – W

Camryn Bennet – The Edge of Never by J. A. Redmerski  -S

Alexandria Andros – Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout  -S

Avery Morgansten – Wait for you also by JLA  -even if “damaged” in some way, this girl is so brave, that I can only consider her – S

Penryn Young – Penryn & The End of the Days series by Susan Ee  -S

Mercy – Cambion series by Shannon Dermott  -W – and kind of annoying

Mara Dyer – Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin  -S

Sydney Sage – Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead  -SW

Anna Whitt – Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins  -W

Alice Bell – White Rabbit Chronicles by Gena Showalter  -W

Blaire Wynn – Too Far series by Abbi Glines  -SW

Maggie Master – The Significance series by Shelly Crane  -W

Theresa Gray – The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare  -S

Sookie Stackhouse – Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris  -S

Rose  ‘Fucking HathawayVampire Academy series by Richelle Mead (I’m sorry-not-sorry for the curse word, but it’s  Rose we’re talking about, she’s  whom I look up to) – S (with a BIG S)

Katy Swartz – Lux series by Jennifer L.Armentrout – S

Sophia Mercer – Hell Hall series by Rachel Hawkins  -SW

Jane Bennet Pride and Prejudice by the one and only Jane Austen (thank you Mom for showing me Jane Austen’s books)  -SW

And then there’s those books you totally loved but the lead character was so annoying!

Abby Abernathy – Beautiful Disaster & Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire  -W

Kiera Allen – Thoughtless series by S.C. Stephens  -W

Nora Grey – Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick  -W

Melanie Stryder/Wanderer – The Host by Stephanie Meyer (I want more books!!!)  -W

Juliette Ferrars – Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi  -SW

Evie Claremont – The Premonition series by Amy A. Bartol  -W

Clary Fray – The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare  – W

Don’t get me wrong, I totally loved ALL the books I mentioned… but the lead characters made me think of violent things.

I hope this enlightened you in any way, if not, well, at least I hope you read the books I mentioned, they are all awesome in their own way. And remember, even if a book is considered canonical or not, you always learn something from it 🙂

My computer is fine… BUT NOT ME! I’M JUST… DAMN! This is book is SO F****** GOOD I JUST CANNOT

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU DID TO ME SUSAN EE??!!

Okk…. no, I’m not calm but I will try not to look so crazy…

Anyways… *awkward silence*  allow me to say that although this book wasn’t as good as the first one, it was still AWESOME, BEAUTIFUL AND THRILLING (I’ll try to stop using capital letters xD)

In this book you see Penryn fighting to save herself, to save her sister, Raffe and everyone, in this book you realize that Penryn is a fighter and a  warrior who fights for what she believes (I guess that’s her life and her family’s ahaha). Penryn struggles in a world where she can’t expect help from nobody, where she can’t rely on anyone but herself. And even though this all seems too badass material you can still see remnants of funny, hilarious, girly Penryn, I mean, this chick is so amazing, I found myself chanting Beyonce’s Run the World (Girls) during her fighting moments – ahaha seriously!!

LET’S NOT FORGET WHAT SHE CALLED RAFFE’S FRIGGING SWORD!!!! She actually named it Pooky Bear!!! I died… I just, I was laughing my ass off (not literally, for heaven’s sake)

“I am Pooky Bear, from an ancient line of archangel swords.” – Raffe

Her poor sword has to announce itself to the other swords with kind of a War Scream… Can you imagine it? Instead of hearing something like “THIS IS SPARTAAAAAA!” no, you hear “I AM POOKY BEAR, FEAR ME, FOR I AM RUTHLESS!” xD

"Do you realize that when she fights battles, she’s going to have to announce herself to the opposing sword? She’ll be forced to say something ridiculous like, ‘I am Pooky Bear, from an ancient line of archangel swords.’ Or, ‘Bow down to me, Pooky Bear, who has only two other equals in all the worlds.’”

Once Raffe saw that Penryn was alive, something woke up in me, something wild, crazy and uncontrollable, something only book nerds and fangirls have… DA FEELS!

‘It really is you’, says Raffe. He’s staring at me, stunned. His fist is mid-air but paused in the middle of pummeling the hell out of Beliel who is bloody and staggering. He starts a slow smile that melts my bones.”

And Penryn’s sister, Paige! I felt so saddened and sorry for her, poor little girl.. I just wanted to hug her and tell her everything’s gonna be fine… 😦

Let’s not forget that Raffe now has demonic wings … (I can’t say more without spoiling, which is something I’m trying to avoid)

I don’t want to say a lot more cause I know most people still haven’t read the book (yes Ana, I’m talking about you *evil smirk*). For those who have, you probably understand what I’m feeling, Susan Ee plotted this, she knows exactly what to do to strike us right in the heart and leave us mental and crying in a corner like kids.

This book cann0t be described , it is something felt (believe me, you feel A LOT!)

If you haven’t even read the first one, Angelfall, allow me to “kindly” say: “WTF are you still doing here?! Go read Angelfall! right now, come back after you read it!” sorry for my rudeness but right now I can’t act all polite and proper xp

As expected,
